"2085" is the 12th and final track on AJR's fifth studio album, The Maybe Man.
Composition[]
It is written in A Major and has a tempo of 132 bpm. It includes mostly acoustic soundtracks and distorted voices into its melodies.
Pre-Release Theories[]
Looping Album Theory[]
- It has been theorized that the song will loop back around to the song “Maybe Man”. People believe this because the letters in "The" are the 20th, 8th, and 5th letters respectively, and "Maybe Man" has the same name as the album with the exception that it is missing "The". This would be the first looped AJR album ever.
- This theory was proven almost correct, as it ends with an interpolation of the first track, Maybe Man, indirectly looping the album.
AJR's Death Theory[]
- It has been theorized that 2085 will include some reference to Adam, Jack, and Ryan’s future deaths. This has been theorized because of three small gravestones seen on the album cover.
- This was proven somewhat correct, as the song deals with death in general, but not exclusively Adam, Jack, or Ryan's.
2 Songs in 1[]
- It has been theorized that this song isn't actually 1 long song but 2 short songs in one. This would be an answer to why the album seems to only have 12 songs despite the 13 originally stated.
- This theory was disproven upon the album's release, although it was partially correct, as it interpolates the first track, Maybe Man.

Trivia[]
- Fans once believed that the starting lyrics of "You work hard for now, just now, just now...You work hard for now, just now, just now..." were actually "You are not alone, just know, just know..." or "You are not full grown, my child, my child...". However, in a recent Q&A, the trio disproved the lyrics, saying that they heard it as the former.
- This is the longest AJR song to date, beating "Country House" and "My Very First Love Song" by about 24 seconds, and beating "The Green And The Town" by about 23 seconds.
- 2085 finishes the main idea in "The Maybe Man" of trying to figure out who you are with verses 5, 6, and 7.
- This is the second AJR song to have a title consisting of only numerals, the first being "212".
