"Bang!" is the seventh track of AJR's fourth album, OK Orchestra. It was the first single to be released from the album.

This song was also performed at the One Spectacular Night live show in 2020, along with a special "making of" segment showing how the song was made.

Description[]

AJR said this about the song and video:

“We wrote ‘BANG!’ about the weird middle-ground between being a kid and becoming an adult; a time when we’re doing all the things adults are supposed to do, but we don’t yet feel grown up,” says AJR. “The fact is, adulthood is bound to hit us at some point, so the plan we made in the song is to ‘go out with a bang.’ Sonically, with every new song we make, we try to stretch out of our AJR comfort zone. With ‘BANG!,’ it felt exciting to step into this darker, horn-heavy vibe, where the verses are small and mysterious, and the chorus explodes into this theatrical trap chorus.”

Reception[]

After it was released, the song became extremely popular and peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard Top 100 charts. The instrumental version of the song was also used in an Apple commercial.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I get up, I get down and I'm jumpin' around
And the rumpus and ruckus are comfortable now
Been a hell of a ride but I'm thinkin' it's time
To grow (bang! bang! bang!)

So I got an apartment across from the park
Put quinoa in my fridge, still I'm not feelin' grown
Been a hell of a ride but I'm thinkin' it's time
To go (bang! bang! bang!) (here we go)

[Chorus]
So put your best face on, everybody
Pretend you know this song, everybody
Come hang
Let's go out with a bang (bang! bang! bang!)
I'm way too young to lie here forever
I'm way too old to try so whatever
Come hang
Let's go out with a bang (bang! bang! bang!)

[Verse 2]
Feel like I'm gonna puke 'cause my taxes are due
Do my password begin with a one or a two?
Been a hell of a ride but I'm thinkin' it's time
To grow (bang! bang! bang!) (metronome)

Man, I'm up to something, ooh-dee-la-dee-doh
Thank you all for comin', I hope you like the show
'Cause it's on a budget, so ooh-dee-la-dee-doh
Yeah, come on here we go, yeah, come on (here we go)

[Chorus]
So put your best face on, everybody
Pretend you know this song, everybody
Come hang
Let's go out with a bang (bang! bang! bang!)

So these girls on my block, keep on messin' me up

Been a hell of a ride, but I think that it's time to grow

I just want a challenge, but I'm way too stressed
'Cause I've been way off balance, tryna take these meds
To make me feel safe (Feel safe), but I'm afraid it may be too late (here we go)

Trivia[]

  • The voice that says, "here we go" and "metronome" is the actual voice of the New York City subway system, Charlie Pellett.
  • The "ring" from the original cover of "Bummerland" can be seen around the clock in the top-right corner of this song's cover.
  • Their performance of Bang! at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards matches the key signature of both its acoustic version, and Way Less Sad (D).
  • It is likely that this song was intended to be included in the deluxe edition of Neotheater, as the original cover of the song featured the same doll-like figures representing the three brothers that can be seen in the cover of Neotheater, and the "How we made NEOTHEATER" YouTube video includes the making of this song.
  • Will Smith occasionally did a remix of the song.[citation needed]
  • This song has been covered by KIDZ BOP Kids
