"Beats" is the ninth track on AJR's third album, Neotheater.

Lyrics[]

Ok
People laugh at my jokes now
Yeah, it’s so strange
To have a bit of success
Now our song plays
In the produce aisle
What if some day you say ‘who the hell is that?’
Ok
This all could be over
By the next day
So should I make famous friends?
Now our song plays in the produce aisle
What if some day you say ‘who the hell is that?’

Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre
Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre

My demographic
Will click on anything graphic
Now I’m in fashion
I don’t know how long it’s lasting
It could be passing
Should I put eggs in more baskets
And try out fashion
Before I go out of fashion

Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k

For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre
Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre

(What can you do?
Don’t be a fool) (x2)

(What can you do?)

Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre

Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
Recording costs
For this whole song
Could all be paid
By Beats by Dre

Would Beats by Dre
Pay 20k
For us to say
That they are great?
And every star
That I used to mock
Was probably paid
Am I the same?

Trivia[]

  • A sample from this song is used at 1:24 in Next Up Forever.
  • Many fans initially believed the line "It's so strange to have a bit of success" to be a reference to the lyric "Congratulations on your bit of success" from "Finale (Can't Wait To See What You Do Next)", as they both contained the words "bit of success". However, AJR confirmed themselves that this was not intentional, but they noted it as being a good observation.
  • This song's name was originally going to be "Beats by Dre", but it was changed to simply "Beats", likely because of copyright issues.[citation needed]
    • The band still refers to it as Beats by Dre anyway though, even representing the song in the NWT and OSN Interludes with the Beats by Dre logo.
  • This song almost didn’t make it on the album.[1]
