Gary Metzger was the father of the AJR brothers and the ex-husband of Laurie Marvald. The song "God Is Really Real" is dedicated to him, and the song "My Play" is about the divorce.
The band surprise released a lyric video for a new song titled "God Is Really Real" on July 3,2023 detailing the brother's relationship with their father, Gary, who was terminally ill at the time of its release. The band announced later that day that Gary had died.
He died of cancer on July 3, 2023.
