"Come one, come all, to AJR's One Spectacular Night!" Jack Met

One Spectacular Night was a livestream concert that was performed on December 26, 2020. It was shown a total of three times, each for a different time zone.

Description[]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, One Spectacular Night was a livestream concert that the viewers were able to watch online after purchasing tickets. The concert had a live chat, similarly to other popular livestreaming platforms, and it also implemented a unique system that allowed the viewers to clap, cheer and stomp by pressing buttons.

The show included many unique special effects and never-before-seen performances, including an entirely new overture featuring samples of many different songs from Neotheater, The Click and OK Orchestra, and multiple musical sketches/interludes. It was also the first time that My Play has been performed live, and the music video for the song was also revealed for the first time directly before the show. It included inspirational messages mentioning the COVID-19 pandemic, and overall it was very well-received among fans.

Controversy[]

Upon its performance, it caused a fair amount of controversy within the AJR community. This was mostly because of some advertising for the show that was seen as dishonest to a lot of people, such as:

  • The main issue that people had was that the band said (or led many people to believe) there would be three different performances of the show for different timezones. However, only the first show was actually performed live, and the second two were merely livestreamed recordings of the first show.[1] Many people thought this was dishonest, as the show was advertised as being a completely live show where the audience could interact with the band by clapping and typing messages in the chat, however this was only true for the first performance, even though the first performance was not advertised as being any different than the other two.
  • In the trailer, and in multiple social media posts, AJR said that the show would contain never-before-heard songs from their upcoming album, OK Orchestra, however there was only one new song from the album performed; My Play. The only song exclusive to the event was another iteration of Overture, sometimes referred to as “Mega-Overture.”
  • Many people thought the "state-of-the-art special effects" were underwhelming and mostly similar to effects from previous live concerts.

One More Spectacular Night[]

  1. Multiple fans watched all three shows, and noted that:
    1. Everything about the show was exactly the same with absolutely no variations, such as a mic failure happening at the exact same time during "Dear Winter" in all three showings.
    2. Many viewers said that the first showing was much laggier than the other two, suggesting that the first recording was live and the other two were not.
