“Outside” is a demo by AJR that is most notable for being the initial version of “Bummerland”, a song appearing on the album “OK ORCHESTRA”. The demo, having some similar chord progressions and instruments as Bummerland, was first teased in AJR’s 4th episode of the Neotheater World Tour Documentary, with the intro documenting the whistling that’s heard prominently in the demo as well as Bummerland.

The demo was first mentioned during AJR’s interview with Zach Sang, covering their album “OK ORCHESTRA”. Adam Met had stated that there was an old version of “Bummerland” with Jack revealed that it was called “Outside”.

In early 2022, a small group of AJR fans had come across a version of the demo titled “Outside (Open Verses)”, with instrumental verses and normal pre-choruses and choruses. This file was privately held by this small portion of the community for a while.

During the OK ORCHESTRA Tour masterclass in New York City, Ryan had discussed this demo, showing a preview of another version with the introduction found in “OK Overture”. Consequently a day later, the open verses demo had leaked onto YouTube, with the initial leak (and the channel) deleted by the RIAA, but has since seen re-uploads.
