"We may be lost and gone forever..." - Growing Old On Bleecker Street

"Rainbow Man" was the fourteenth track on one of AJR's old albums, Born and Bred. It was deleted after the release of the I'm Ready EP, and most recordings of the song have been taken down.

Description[]

This song is about "Michael J" (who may be referring to a real person) coming out as gay and facing the backlash that came along with it. It mainly features piano and guitar.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Once there was a boy
His name was Michael J
He told them bout' the changes
Yet, he told them every day
And still there wasn't love
They fought with Michael J
And never understanded why they heard that he was gay

[Chorus]
With rainbow man
And the people that I'm sure
Will end up in their perfect world
With rainbow man
Spicing up a boy likes boy

[Verse 2]
And when he told the crowd
That he had finally changed
They panicked into chaos
And named him the deranged

He wept and cried and sobbed
For he could not see
That it was just inside of him
What he was meant to be

[Chorus]
With rainbow man
And the people that I'm sure
Will end up in their perfect joy
With rainbow man
Showing them boy likes boy

[Bridge]
And why can't we accept them fine
In our race of life
A little change could never hurt
A big change tonight
And why did we just hang around
While people shout and hurt
For we could be their only hope
So let this song be heard

[Chorus]
And rainbow man
And the people that I'm sure
Will end up in their perfect joy
And rainbow man
And the people that I'm sure
Will end up in their perfect joy
With rainbow man
Don't you learn boy likes boy
