So What is a demo shown by AJR on the Zach Sang Show on November 14, 2023. According to the band, they attempted to put the song on OK Orchestra (2021), but with input from Jack's girlfriend, and his brothers, the song was eventually scrapped and reworked as Yes I'm A Mess as a single for The Maybe Man (2023). The western tune that the band was testing in So What can partly be heard with the whistling at the end of Yes I'm A Mess.
